$795.00

“UNITED STATES AND ADDITIONS 1820” Edinburgh: John Thomson, c. 1820. Fine engraved map with beautiful original hand-coloring. Ref:  Wheat (Transmississippi West) #340. (Paper: 534 x 710mm – 21 x 28 ¼’’   Image:  505 x 600mm – 19 ¾ x 23 ½’’). Verso blank, centerfold as issued.

This is one of the earliest obtainable maps to show the United States from Coast to Coast, reflecting the information derived from the expeditions of Lewis & Clark, Zebulon Pike, John Long, Alexander von Humboldt, Alexander MacKenzie and other early explorers of the Transmississippi West.

The map provides an early view of "Manifest Destiny" while also showing how little was known about the vast expanse of land west of the Mississippi -  just 29 years prior to the California Gold Rush.

Native American Tribes are located throughout and expeditions of Lewis & Clark, Pike and Long are noted including the note: ”Ft. Mandan Wintering of Mess. Lewis & Clark”.

In southern California the "supposed course of a river" which Wheat notes "extends . . . from a Salt Lake (Laguna de Miera) to San Francisco Bay, while the (unnamed) Multnomah flows from Lake Timpanogos and its headwaters nearly touch those of the "Rio Nanesi or Napese" (the Arkansas) and the Rio Grande.”

The map emphasizes the progress of the exploration of the American West. States east of the Mississippi are established with the exception of Illinois Territory, Michigan Territory, Alabama Territory and the Northwest Territory.

Most of the Louisiana Purchase lands are now called "Missouri Territory," with the map depicting in great detail the river systems and finely hachured mountain ranges.

An imformative and attractive map in excellent condition and original color. Unobtrusive closed fold separation at lower margin.
