“CHINA” Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., c. 1850 (dated). Fine engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 11 1/4 x 114 1/4'') . From the "New Universal Atlas". Fine condition, evenly toned.
This historical map depicts China (including present-day Korea) with its Provinces named and in contrasting colors. Islands in the China Sea, including Formosa (now Taiwan), are noted. Topographical features are shown with deserts, cities, towns and waterways identified. The Great Wall of China and Imperial Canal are also well marked. A very attractive view of China as it was known in the mid-19th century.
