''ARKANSAS'' Massachusetts: Thomas Gamaliel Bradford, c. 1838. (Image: 11 1/2 x 141/4'')
Very fine & beautifully engraved map with original hand-coloring. Engraved by G. W. Boynton (owner of an engraving company in Boston 1830’s - 40’s). From An Illustrated Atlas, Geographical, Statistical and Historical of the United States and Adjacent Countries by T. G. Bradford. Reference Phillips Atlases #1381.
This exceptionally handsome map is one of the earliest published maps of the state of Arkansas. It depicts Arkansas just two years after statehood with the counties named and in contrasting pastel colors. Topographical features are shown with various mountains, ''salt works'', water routes, cities and towns identified. A very interesting and very scarce view of the region as it existed in the early 19th century.
