“A NEW MAP OF SOUTH CAROLINA…” Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., c. 1853. Engraved map with original hand-coloring. Image: 11 ¼ x 14’’)
This map depicts South Carolina with its counties named and in contrasting colors. Topographical features are detailed and major cities and towns identified. Numerous stage routes, water routes and rail routes are located.
The inset, lower right, lists the Steam Boat Routes from “Charleston to Savannah” and “Savannah to Augusta”. Also included is a detailed inset of “CHARLESTON”- with streets, boroughs, and major buildings located. An excellent view of the state as it existed prior to the Civil War.
