“A CELESTIAL PLANISPHERE, OR MAP OF THE HEAVENS” Elijah H. Burritt. Hartford, CT: F. J. Huntington, c. 1835. (Image: 14 1/8 x 20 1/8’’) Engraved by W. G. Evans. From Atlas Designed to Illustrate the Geography of the Heavens. Engraved map with original hand-coloring.
This very detailed celestial chart is based on the celestial works of Pardies and Doppelmayr. It depicts the heavens as known by 1835 with the constellations identified.
Centered on the “Ecliptic Line” the chart identifies the various zones associated with each major constellation. The Milky Way is shaded in blue.
Along the bottom is “A Scale exhibiting the Sun’s Place in the Ecliptic every day in the Year”. The key upper left classifies the stars by their magnitude.
