“EUROPA…” Seutter. Augsburg: T. C. Lotter, c. 1760. Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 7 ¾ x 10 1/8’’)
This is the reduced edition after Seutter’s map of Europe. The map depicts the European continent with countries named and in contrasting colors. Topographical features are well shown and cities, towns, waterways, mountains, forests, deserts, and islands are identified.
The large cartouche, upper left - resting under Iceland, depicts Christ, standing above the title, which proclaims Europe as Christian. Beneath him are allegorical figures, and symbols of the continent and its culture.
