$0.00

Original leaf from a manuscript Spanish Antiphonal on animal parchment.  (555 x 385mm – 21 7/8 x 15 1/8''). The manuscript text and music (six lines of music on a five-line stave) were beautifully executed by hand over 450 years ago!!!

Spain, c. 1550.  This Choirbook once belonged to the Convent of San Pedro Regalado de la Aguilera, and was likely scribed there.

One illuminated initial in deep blue with red and blue penwork and two cadel (knot-work) initials.  The last three initials of the last word (recto) are presented in a red and yellow banner.

This leaf continues the Common of Apostles and Evangelists.  The text begins: ''[in om]nem terram...'' (Their span goes forth through all the earth, their words to the utmost bounds of the world).

The knot-work ''C'' begins ''Clamaverunt...'' (The just call and the Lord hears).

The second knot-work ''C'' begins:  ''Constitues...'' (You will make them princes over all the earth:  may this song make your name remembered, Lord).

The illuminated ''E'' begins:  ''Ecce ego...'' (Behold I send you out [as sheep in the midst of wolves]).

Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline.
