$0.00

A very fine manuscript commission on parchment, executed at Dunquerque, 12 May 1671. Signed by Louis XIV (“Louis”) as King of France, and countersigned by Michel le Tellier (“le Tellier”) as Secretary of State. (9 1/2 x 12 3/4'')

Accompanying the document is a fine early 19th century engraving of the King.

Louis XIV (1638-1715), known as the “Sun King”, was King of France from 1643-1715, the longest reign in European history. His idea of government can be summed up in words attributed to him: “L’etat c’est moi” (“I am the state”). France was at its zenith while he ruled. His court was the most magnificent in Europe, and French arts and letters were in their golden age.

Michel le Tellier (1603-1685) was one of the most influential ministers in Louis’ court. He served as Secretary of State for War from 1643-1677 and as Chancellor of France from 1677-1685. His sons were Francois-Michel le Tellier (Marquis de Louvois),  and Charles Maurice le Tellier (Archbishop of Rheims).
