A fine manuscript French Renaissance Notarial legal document written on parchment in a cursive hand, c. 1523. (145 x 290 mm)

This document was executed during the reign of Francois I, and contains legal matters related to property of Lord Francois d’Harcourt. It opens with his title “The noble and powerful Lord Francois of Harcourt, knight , baron Beaufort…”

The region involved is the Auge Valley, Normandy, and the instigator of the notarial act was an important nobleman of the region of Viking descent: Francois d’Harcourt, baron of Beaufort, Beuvron, etc.

When the Viking chieftain Rollo obtained the territories which would make up Normandy, he distributed them as estates among his main supporters. Among these lands were the seigneurie of Harcourt, and the county of Pont-Audemer, granted to Bernard the Dane, ancestor of the lords (seigneurs) of Harcourt. The tombs of this noble family are still located in the parish church of Beuvron-en-Auge.

The French text is in a fine secretarial cursive hand, with two notarial signatures.
