Original leaf from an Italian Dominican Antiphonal on animal parchment – written in Latin. (745 x 500mm - 29 3/8 x 19 3/4'').
The manuscript text and music (six lines of music on a four-line stave) were beautifully executed by hand over 400 years ago!!! Italy, c. 1570's.
One exceptional illuminated "O" (7 7/8 x 8 1/2'') inhabited with numerous human figures including (left to right on bottom): St. Jerome (writing), a Pope (probably Pius V), King David (wearing crown), St. Dominic (Friar in front), St. Peter Martyr and St. Thomas Aquinas.
Above them is God the Father, God the Holy Spirit (represented by a dove), God the Son, the Virgin Mary, and St. John the Evangelist. The initial is in colors of blue, pink, red, green and white resting on a burnished gold ground!
The illuminated “O” begins the antiphon for All Saints: "O Quam..." (O, how glorious is the kingdom, in which all the saints rejoice with Christ! Arrayed in white robes, [they follow the Lamb, wherever He goes].
Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline.
