“MAP OF KANSAS, NEBRASKA AND COLORADO. Showing also THE SOUTHERN portion of DACOTAH.” Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr. c. 1864, from Mitchell's New General Atlas. Original hand-colored map.        (Image: 11 ½ x 14’’)

This handsome map depicts the New State of Kansas (admitted 1861), and Territories of Nebraska (admitted 1867), Colorado (admitted 1876) and the southern portion of Dacotah (a territory, created in 1861, which was later split into North and South Dakota and admitted as states in 1889), and a region “Attached to Dacotah” (this had been Idaho Territory briefly in 1863, and later became Wyoming).  Counties are in contrasting colors and topographical features shown.

The “Gold Region” surrounding Denver City is noted.  Indian Tribes and “ancient ruins” are located throughout the map. Major towns, cities, rail routes, land routes (including the Pony Express) and water routes are identified and exploratory routes delineated.

Also of note:  the Black Hills region in “Dacotah Territory” is shown where in just a few years (1875) gold would be discovered & Indian Wars would commence (Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876).
