“CANADA EAST FORMERLY LOWER CANADA” Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., c. 1850.  Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 12 ½ x 15 ½’’)

This map depicts “Canada East” in great detail. Topographical features are shown with major towns, cities, mountains, and water routes identified. The inset depicts “NOVA SCOTIA NEW BRUNSWICK &c” with counties in contrasting colors and listed by number in the margin. A very attractive view of the region as it was known in the 1850’s.

Canada East, previously called Lower Canada, is the region in Canada now known as Quebec. From 1791 to 1841 the region was known as Lower Canada and from 1841 to 1867 as Canada East, though the two names continued to be used interchangeably.
