“MAP OF TURKEY IN EUROPE” Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., [1850] - 1854.  Fine engraved map with original hand-coloring.(Image: 11 ¾ x 9 ¾’’) . Excellent condition with  pleasing color. Dated 1850 in the lower margin, published in the 1854 edition of the "New Universal Atlas". 

This historical map depicts the extension of the Ottoman empire into Europe as “Turkey in Europe”. It contains the present-day region which includes the Balkan countries of Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia…

The key on the right identifies the numbered provinces. Topographical features are shown with cities, towns and waterways identified. Islands are also identified.  A very attractive view of the region as it was known in the mid-19th century.
