This map depicts Africa with the explored and settled areas along the coastal regions well detailed and the interior information based on the “latest authorities” (including numerous notes regarding specific explorations and discoveries).  The chart in the upper right explains political boundaries. 

The inset shows the “MAP OF THE REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA From Gurley’s Report Made to the Senate of the United States 1850…” and includes a description of the History and Geography of the region. Liberia was a project for settlement of freed American Negroes begun by the American Colonization Society and named by Robert Goodloe Harper from the Latin liber “free”.
