''MAP OF TEXAS FROM THE MOST RECENT AUTHORITIES…'' Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., c. 1850, first issue. Fine engraved map with original hand coloring, even light toning.

(Ref: Day, #34; Phillips #800). (Image: 12 1/8 x 15’’)

This important historical map depicts Texas five years after statehood, and immediately after the 1850 Compromise that reduced the western boundary claim (along the Rio Grande northward to the Arkansas River). This is the first atlas map to show the reduced boundaries. Counties are named and in contrasting colors.

The map accurately depicts the boundaries and river system, and locates major trails. Most cities, towns, military forts, the ''Silver Mine'' (west of San Antonio) and the ''Battle of S. Jacinto 1836'' are located. Indian tribes are noted in the central, northwestern and western region.

The map also includes the erroneous comment regarding the terrain of the western region formerly part of the state. The inset of ''Texas North of the Red River'' shows the full region claimed by Texas prior to statehood with the colored area as its current boundary.
