This historical map depicts the Kingdom of Scotland as it appeared in the early 18th century. Topographical features are very well defined with most major towns, cities, mountains, land routes and water routes identified. Counties are named and delineated, and numerous castles located.

The decorative cartouche in the upper left includes cherubs and mythological figures with a crowned lion and unicorn holding the British coat-of-arms.  The mileage scale in the upper right is surrounded by cherubs dancing on clouds & holding the Scottish coat-of-arms.

Homann produced maps that were exceptional for their clarity & comprehensiveness. ''The founder of the dominant dynasty of German 18th century cartographers...He was one of the first to color his maps at origin...'' (Portinaro & Knirsch The Cartography of North America, p. 315).
