''JOHNSON’S JAPAN NIPPON, KIUSIU, SIKOK, YESSO AND THE JAPANESE KURILES''  New York:  Johnson and Ward, c. 1862.  Original hand-colored map. (Image 13 1/4 x 15 1/4”)

This very historical map was published just 8 years after Commodore Perry of the US Navy secured the first commercial treaty with Japan. The surveys and reconnaissance of the Perry expedition provided the source data for this map - thus making it the most accurate and up-to-date commercial map of Japan to be published in the United States at that time!

Japan is shown with topographical features well detailed and political boundaries, major land routes and water routes identified.  Insets depict ''YESSO AND THE JAPANESE KURILES'' and ''BAY OF NAGASAKI'' - providing a very detailed view of Japan as it was just becoming known in the 1860’s.
