''COUNTY MAP OF KANSAS'' Philadelphia: Wm. Bradley & Co., c. 1881. From ''OUR WESTERN EMPIRE: OR THE NEW WEST BEYOND THE MISSISSIPPI…''. Lithographed map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 5 1/2 x 8 1/2’’)
This map depicts Kansas as it existed in the early 1880’s. Counties are named and shown in contrasting colors. The county structure is shown prior to the changes of 1881: St. John was soon formed out of Wallace County, and Foote became Gray County. Topographical features well noted, and most major cities, towns, railroads and waterways are identified.
