''AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE'' c. 1845 - Levasseur

''AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE.'' Paris:  Victor Levasseur, c. 1845.  Engraved map with original hand-coloring. From Atlas Universel Illustre…(Image : 11x17’’).  Beautiful map in excellent condition from one of the finest decorative atlases of the 19th century.

This map depicts the American continent as it existed in 1845 – when Mexico still owned the region west of Texas to the Pacific and the Republic of Texas had not yet joined the United States (admitted December 1845). The Republic’s borders are shown based on Stephen F. Austin’s 1830 map (in a heart shape - following the Nueces River northward to the Red River instead of the Rio Grande northward to the Arkansas).

Oregon Territory extends to the controversial 54° 40', and Alaska is labeled Russian America. Major cities, mountains, waterways and military forts are also located.

The very ornate and detailed border depicts scenes with animals and vegetation native to North America. The chart at the bottom lists the population of each country (The Republic of Texas was only 200,000). A most unusual, handsome and very informative map.
