''SPANISH NORTH AMERICA'' Edinburgh: John Thomson, c. 1814 (dated), published in the first edition of Thomson's New General Atlas.  Very fine engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Ref: Wheat, #320; Phillips #731).   A large folio map, Image: 20 x 24 1/4’’, with centerfold as issued. Lower margin extended to facilitate matting, some wear and repair to lower centerfold.

This very important historical and decorative map was published just 11 years after the Louisiana Purchase. It depicts the region which is today Louisiana, Arkansas, part of Missouri (including what would become Kansas City), Kansas, part of Colorado (to include where Denver is today), part of Utah and Nevada, Southern California (including the area of present day Los Angeles), Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Mexico. Indian tribes, Indian Hunting Grounds, Buffalo ranges, and Missions are located.

Sources for the map include both Pike & Humboldt explorations. Topographical features are exceptionally well detailed with most towns, settlements and missions located. A large number of Indian Tribes are also identified.

In addition to geographical interest, this map by Thompson is noted for excellence and clarity of engraving, and is considered among the best Atlas map of this region during an important transition period.
