[OKLAHOMA] [ INDIAN TERRITORY] Chicago & New York: Rand, McNally & Co., c.1898. Color-printed map with original color. (Image: 12 1/4 x 19’’)

This detailed map depicts Indian Territory and the Territory of Oklahoma with the region of the originally relocated Five Civilized Tribes boldly noted (Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctaw).

Other tribes subsequently removed to the Indian Territory are also shown.  Topographical features are very well noted. Counties, towns, cities, railroads, waterways, coalmines, military reservations and Indian lands are all identified.  A very informative view of the region just four years after Oklahoma became a territory (statehood in 1907).

Of particular interest: the capital of Oklahoma Territory is shown as Guthrie. It was officially changed to Oklahoma City in 1911 after a controversial midnight move by citizens of Oklahoma City. ''The Indian Territory was never an organized territory, but was set aside as a home for the Five Civilized Tribes, who were removed to it in the period 1820-45…Lands were held in common and each tribe had its own government.'' (Scribners: Dictionary of American History, p.109).
