''INDIAN TERRITORY''  S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr. Philadelphia: Wm. Bradley & Co., c. 1886.  Lithographed map with original hand-coloring.(Image: 11 5/8  x 14 1/2’’).

This detailed map depicts Indian Territory with the region of the originally relocated Five Civilized Tribes boldly noted (Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctaw).  Other tribes subsequently removed to the Indian Territory are also shown.

Treaty dates are noted throughout the map.  The topographical features are remarkably accurate - based on the U.S. Geological Survey.  Most towns, waterways, railroads, and depots are located.

''The Indian Territory was never an organized territory, but was set aside as a home for the Five Civilized Tribes, who were removed to it in the period 1820-45…Lands were held in common and each tribe had its own government.'' (Scribners: Dictionary of American History, p.109).
