 This map depicts Africa with the explored and settled areas along the coastal regions well detailed and the interior information based on the “latest authorities” (including numerous notes regarding specific explorations and discoveries). 

The chart in the upper right details ''Possessions of the European Powers &c''''Snow Mountain'' likely refers to the Drakensberg Range.  The Nile arises from a long truncated range named Mountains of the Moon in the east and Mountains of Kong in the west. The Blue Nile is depicted arising from Lake Demba in Abyssinia.

The inset, lower left, shows a map of ''LIBERIA'' with an inset of ''MONROVIA'' Liberia was a project for settlement of freed American Negroes begun by the American Colonization Society and named by Robert Goodloe Harper from the Latin liber “free”.  The Republic of Liberia declared its independence on July 26, 1847, the same year this map was published. It is shown as a possession of the US on the chart at upper left. The United States recognized Liberia's independence during the American Civil War, on February 5, 1862
