''COUNTY MAP OF VIRGINIA, AND NORTH CAROLINA''  Philadelphia:  S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr., c. 1860 - from the First edition of the Mitchell, Jr. "New General Atlas".  (Image: 11 x 13 1/8’’). Original engraved map with unusually bright hand-coloring.

This map, with its highly decorative border, depicts Virginia and North Carolina with their counties named and in contrasting colors.  Topographical features are shown with major towns, cities, mountains, rail routes, land routes and water routes identified.   A very detailed view of the states as they existed prior to the onset of the American Civil WarVirginia includes the area which became West Virginia in 1863.

North Carolina is rarely seen in conjunction with Virginia in American atlas maps (Unlisted in Tar Heel Maps). Mitchell reverted to the more common combination of North and South Carolina in the 1863 edition.
