‘’VIRGINIE’’ Paris: Alain Manesson Mallet, c. 1683. Engraved map with later hand-coloring. Reference:  Burden # 567.(Image : 5 ¾ x 4)

This miniature map depicts the Chesapeake Bay in ''Virginie'' as it was known in the 1680’s. It is based on the Smith map, which was the first printed map of Virginia and one which had a profound impact on the mapping of the colony - serving as the basic prototype of the region.

This map identifies various settlements and Indian villages such as Jamestowne, Baye de Chesapeach,  Powhatan, Tockwoghs and Mannahoacks. The Appalachian Mountains and Mariland are also located.

Mallet (1630-1706) was a Parisian engineer who taught mathematics & geometry at the court of Louis XIV & was an expert on fortifications. Because he traveled extensively, Mallet personally surveyed many of the maps. (Ref: Norwich, Maps of Africa, p. 182).
