Original leaf from a manuscript Spanish Antiphonal on animal parchment. (555 x 385mm – 21 7/8 x 15 1/8'')  The manuscript text and music (six lines of music on a five-line stave) were beautifully executed by hand over 450 years ago!!!

Spain, c. 1550.  This Choirbook once belonged to the Convent of San Pedro Regalado de la Aguilera, and was likely scribed there.

One illuminated initial in red with blue penwork; One illuminated initial in deep blue with red penwork and one cadel (knot-work) initial.  

This leaf continues the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel (29 September).  The kno0-work initial ''G'' begins the Glory Be ''Gloria...'' (Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit).  The illuminated ''M'' begins ''Michael...'' (Archangel Michael, come with help to the people of God. Michael is the prince of paradise, whom the hosts of angels honor. You have appeared with glory in the sight of the Lord, therefore the Lord has clothed you in splendor). The illuminated ''H'' begins: ''Hic est...''' (This is Michael, who to battle leads the armies of the skies.  Whosoever on him calleth blessed within his wardship lies. His a prayer whose voice availing aids from earth toward heaven to rise). 

Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline.
