“INSULÆ AMERICANÆ IN OCEANO SEPTENTRIONALI…” Amsterdam: Jan Jansson, c. 1636.

State 1. Verso text: Dutch. Beautifully engraved map with later hand-coloring. (Ref: Burden #248). Minor toning and small bit of loss in top border at center – not affecting map.  (Image: 14 ¾ x 20 ½’’)

This important and highly decorative sea chart traces the coastline from the mouth of the Chesapeake, around Virginia, Carolina, Florida, the entire coast of the Gulf of Mexico, and Central America, to the mouth of the Orinoco River on the northern coast of South America.

All the Caribbean Islands are present with a great number of place names provided - including the great Spanish trading ports of Cartagena and La Habana - recalling the days of the Spanish Main and the English buccaneer fleets. Cartographically drawn on the extremely rare chart of Hessel Gerritsz 1631. This is the first state of this map. The elaborate title cartouche depicts marine and other fauna found in the region - such as turtles, iguanas, alligators and large bats!
