Original leaf with woodcut illustration from the Bible in Latin (Biblia Latina) produced for Anton Koberger of Nuremberg. Printed by J. Sacon of Lyon in 1521. (330 x 245mm - 13.2 x 9.8"). Reference: Darlow and Moule #6101.  Condition note: Some old remargining  - not into text.

Koberger was the leading German publisher of his day - known particularly for the Nuremberg Chronicle.  He was also Albrecht Durer’s Godfather – providing Durer with his early training!

Text for this leaf is nicely printed in gothic letter in two columns. Rubricating and underlining are executed by hand in red ink. One six-line & eight four-line woodcut initials surrounded by a floral design; one fifteen-line woodcut illustration of John the Evangelist – with his attribute the eagle.

This leaf contains text from I Peter 5: 1-14, All of II Peter, and I John 1:1 – 2:1 ''Seniores…'' (The ancients therefore that are among you, I beseech, whom am myself also an ancient, & a witness of the sufferings of Christ: as also a partaker of that glory which is to be revealed in time to come… In the last days there shall come deceitful scoffers, walking after their own lusts, Saying: Where is his promise or his coming?… But of this one thing be not ignorant, my beloved, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, & a thousand years as one day…The day of the Lord shall come as a thief…Wherefore, dearly beloved, waiting for these things, be diligent that you may be found before him unspotted & blameless in peace…This is the declaration which we have heard from him, & declare unto you: that God is light, & in him there is no darkness…& the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin…)
