"A GROUP OF CARNATIONS"  : Exquisite original flora from the famous original large folio edition of one of the most impressive English botanical works ever produced:  THE TEMPLE OF FLORA by Dr. Robert John Thornton. Paper size:  23 ½ x 18 5/8’’, Image size:  18 5/8 x 14 ¼’’, Plate mark 20 ½ x 15 ¾’’.

Produced in London, c. 1799-1807.

The first florals with a landscape background, the images from The Temple of Flora, with their exotic and dramatic setting, are a combination of aquatint, mezzotint and line engraving - partially printed in color and partially colored by hand. This image of Carnations (State III) is aquatint, stipple and line engraving. It was painted by Henderson, and the plate ws prepared by Caldwell, publication date April 5, 1803. 

Determined to produce the greatest series of botanicals, Dr. Thornton exhausted his fortune on this costly, magnificent endeavor.
