$0.00

Original leaf from a printed 17th century Gregorian chant in two colors on fine hand made paper. Latin text with black hufnagel music (named for the resemblance to horseshoe-nail) on a black five-line stave.  (530 x 390mm – 21 x 15 3/8’’)

From an Antiphonal produced and published in 1667 by Christopher Kuchler in Mainz, Germany.

Five large initials in red, or black and white surrounded by a black and white floral design.

This leaf is for the 16th through 18th Sunday after Pentecost. The red ''C'' begins part of Luke 14: 8, 10-11: “Cum vocatus…” (When thou art invited to a wedding, sit down in the lowest place: that when he who invited thee cometh, he may say to thee: Friend, go up higher. Then shalt thou have glory before them that sit at table with thee).

The large “M” begins Matthew 22:36-37:“Magister…”  (Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart).

The red “Q” begins part of Matthew 22: 42-44: “Quid vobis…” (What think you of Christ? Whose son is he? They say to him: David’s. He saith to them: How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand).

The large “D” begins part of Matthew 9:2: “Dixit…” (He said to the man sick of the palsy: Be of good heart, son, thy sins are forgiven thee).

The large “T” begins part of Luke 5: 25, 18:43: “Tulit…” (He took up the bed on which he lay; and he went away to his own house, glorifying God. And all the people, when thy saw it, gave praise to God).

Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline. They were used by priests, monks and nuns in churches and religious enclaves. The large size allowed them to be seen by multiple members of a choral section.

This is an extremely large printed leaf that shows obvious devotional use. There are some stains and five marginal tears were strengthened with contemporary paper.
