This extremely detailed historical map depicts Texas outlined in red, with its counties bordered in yellow. Reeves County, created in April 1883 (taken from the northwest portion of Pecos), is not yet shown.
Tom Green County is shown in its full extent before eleven additional counties were eventually subdivided from it – the first being Midland County in 1885. Topographical features are well noted, with major towns, cities, trails, rail, and water routes identified.
Major ranches are also located such as Dockum’s Ranch (Crosby County: W. C. Dockum was a successful buffalo hunter) and the famous King Ranch (Nueces County - 825,000 acre ranch),
Of particular interest: Greer County is shown inside the Texas State Boundary. Dispute over who actually owned Greer County continued even after 1896 when the Supreme Court ruled that the area was not under Texas jurisdiction.
