Petri in Basel, December 1, 1498.  (290 x 203 mm – 11 ½ x 8’’)  Reference: Goff #B-609; Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke #4284 ; Darlow and Moule #6085 (note); Hain #3172. Printed in black ink with hand-illuminated letters in red and blue.

This early New Testament leaf consists of text printed in gothic letters. The text begins I Peter 1: 13 “Succincti lumbos…” (Having the loins of your mind girt up, being sober, trust perfectly in the grace which is offered you in the revelation of Jesus Christ…It is written: You shall be holy, for I am holy. And if you invoke as Father him who without respect of persons, judgeth according to every one’s work: converse in fear during the time of your sojourning here…For all flesh is as grass; and all the glory thereof as the flower of grass. The grass is withered, and the flower thereof is fallen away.  But the word of the Lord endureth forever…).

The red illuminated “D” in the central text block begins I Peter 2:1-7: “Deponentes…” (Wherefore laying away all malice, and all guile, and dissimulations, and envies, and all detractions, as newborn babes, desire the rational milk without guile that thereby you may grow unto salvation: If so be you have tasted that the Lord is sweet…).

The central text is surrounded by Nicolaus de Lyra’s famous commentary. “This work, which was used by Luther, and influenced some of his writings” was first published with the biblical text in 1481.

An attractive leaf in excellent condition with full margins, bold printing, and very minor staining in margin.
