One two-line hand-illuminated initial in liquid gold on blue ground. Printed by Germain Hardouyn & fully illuminated by hand in gold & colors in his workshop in Paris, c. 1510.

The large miniature (verso) depicts the beginning of the PASSION OF CHRIST and is hand-painted in tempera colors and gold.  At the top is a night scene with Christ kneeling in prayer while his disciples are shown asleep on the hill below him. The larger scene at the bottom depicts Judas  behind Christ’s left shoulder in the process of planting the kiss of betrayal while Peter raises his sword to cut off the ear of Malchus – the high priest’s servant.  Soldiers are present to take Christ on his prophesized journey.  The faces are beautifully detailed and exquisitely painted.  The text beneath reads “Passio domini nostril…” (The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John).

Elaborate border (recto) hand-painted with tempera color in a floral motif with acanthus leaves & berries on liquid gold ground, and an eight-line illuminated miniature of St. Mark seated with his attribute the lion seated on his left side. The text by St. Mark begins Mark 15: 14-20: “In illo tempore…” (At that time, Jesus appeared to the eleven as they were at the table: and he upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen him after he was risen again. And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved…).
