The illustrations in this early German herbal were designed and cut by David Kandel of Strassburg, who also executed maps and illustrations for Munster’s Cosmography. (Ref: Blunt, The illustrated Herbal)
A fine example of this landmark work, printed in black-letter, paper evenly toned. The depiction of the Apple tree is enhanced by a serpent and Adam's skull and leg bone, referring to the Biblical story of the Forbidden Fruit in the Garden of Eden.
