MAP OF THE UNITED STATES AND TEXAS…” New York: Daniel Burgess, c. 1839 (dated in the lower left margin), from Smith's Geography for Schools. Engraved map with original hand coloring. The map show evidence of hard usage with some staining and reinforced center fold, with some loss at bottom border - typical for a school atlas map of this period that might have been used by many students. (Image: 10 ½ x 17 ½’’)

This detailed historical map shows the Independent Republic of Texas and the United States at a particularly interesting and rapidly changing period. Indian Tribes are well located throughout the map.

The Independent Republic of Texas is shown prominently in its largest configuration in the map and the inset. Within the Republic of Texas major cities & towns are identified. A very unusual historical map!

Wisconsin Territory (admitted as a State in 1848) includes some of today's Minnesota.

Part of Iowa Territory would become Minnesota Territory in 1849 (Iowa was admitted 1846).

The Mandan District shown here would change a great deal - finally becoming part of Wyoming, the Dakotas, Montana and Nebraska. A note appears in the region of the Black Hills (in Mandan District) stating that it contains a “Valley through which a loaded wagon may pass”

The Oregon Territory (later part of Idaho, Washington and Oregon) is shown extending north towards the controversial 54° 40'.

The Indian Territory is rarely seen in this configuration (including part of today's Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma).
