Silver & Jasper Seal Ring - WAR GALLEY, c. 2nd-3rd Century AD

$0.00

SILVER and JASPER SEAL RING - Ancient Roman, Circa 2nd – 3rd Century AD

“WAR GALLEY”

An unusual Roman silver seal ring with a red jasper seal stone. The central intaglio is carved with a stylized War Galley with high bows, 3 figures and oars. The ring is in an excellent state of preservation with surface toning of the silver and some spots of horn silver.

The Signet, or Seal Ring, was significant in Roman society - used in validating serious legal documents by its owner.  Intaglios, and engraved or intaglio-cut gems could serve as seals, even while appearing decorative. Cicero mentions them, and Pliny cites that the fashion of wearing signet rings eventually shifted to the little finger.  A signet ring was highly representative of the individual who wore it.  It was, in effect, his or her signature.
