Bronze Age Pottery Amphora - Siwa Culture, China - c 1400-1100 BC

Nicely proportioned redware handled amphora with “Saddle mouth “ rim and wide strap handles extending from the rim to the shoulder. The body tapers gracefully from a wide shoulder to the much smaller foot.

The Siwa culture was a Chinese late Neolithic to early Bronze age society of circa 1400-1100 BC found mainly in southeastern Gansu Province along the Tao River, a tributary of the Yellow River. The culture was identified in 1924 by the Swedish geologist Johan Andersson. The arched saddle-shaped rim, called a “saddle mouth” by Andersson is a distinctive hallmark of Siwa pottery.

A finely crafted article of utilitarian war reflecting the skill of Chinese artisan at an early period. Crude repair to one handle, otherwise in very nice condition with minor chipping and surface deposits.
