Bronze Fibula: Roman - Eagle Brooch
Circa 1st - 2nd Century AD
An exceptionally fine Ancient Roman bronze zoomorphic brooch depicting an eagle with outspread wings. There are “circle and dot” magic symbols on the chest, wings and tail. The eagle was the symbol of Ancient Rome, and this was probably a military item worn by a member of the Roman Legions. The condition of this rare brooch is remarkable: it has a fine dark patina and the original pin is intact. See Hattatt “Ancient Brooches,” for other eagle brooches (pictured on page 361).
The fibula was in widespread use throughout the ancient world. The Roman conquests spread the use of the fibula, which became the basis for more complicated brooches. In the severe climate of northern Europe, it routinely functioned as a fastening for a heavy cloak or tunic.
