Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 15 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown and red ink in gothic script on animal vellum.(155 x 105mm – 6 1/8 x 4 1/8’’) 

One two-line illuminated initial in burnished gold with a deep blue interior with delicate white tracery on a pink ground; quarter rinceaux border in burnished gold, blue, red and green.

The illuminated “S” begins part of a sermon written by Bishop Fulbert of Chartres (c. 951-c.1029):  “Sancta maria…” (Blessed Mary, be thou a help to the helpless, strength to the fearful, comfort to the sorrowful, pray for the people, plead for the clergy, intercede for all holy women consecrated to God; may all who keep thy sacred commemoration feel the might of thine assistance.  Be thou ever ready to assist us when we pray, and bring back to us the answers to our prayers. Make it thy continual care to pray for the people of God, thou who, blessed by God, didst merit to bear the Redeemer of the world…).
