Original leaf from a medieval Psalter. 18 lines of ruled Latin text, written in gothic liturgical bookhand script on animal vellum. (150x108mm – 6 x 4 ¼’’) 

One multi-line illuminated initial in heavy burnished gold with pink on a deep blue ground and extending along the text in pink, burnished gold and blue; one multi-line illuminated initial in pink inhabited with a Raven on gold ground – extending along the text in pink and burnished gold with another Raven resting on top, and a whimsical creature at the bottom!   Twenty one-line illuminated initials alternating in blue with red pen-work, and burnished gold with blue pen-work (many extending into the margin). 

French Flanders, c. 1275-1300.

The one-line illuminated “E” begins Psalm 118 (King James 119) 41-48: “Et respondebo…” (Let thy mercy also come upon me, O Lord: thy salvation according to thy word. So shall I answer them that reproach me in anything; that I have trusted in thy words). 

The multi-line illuminated “M” continues verses 49-56: “Memor…” (Be thou mindful of thy word to the servant, in which thou hast given me hope. This hath comforted me in my humiliation: because thy word hath enlivened me…).

The multi-line illuminated “P” continues verses 57-61: “Porto me…” (O Lord, my portion, I Have said, I would keep thy law. I entreated thy face with all my heart: have mercy on me according to thy word. I have thought on my ways: and turned my feed unto thy testimonies…).
