Original manuscript Missal leaf executed by hand on animal parchment. (330 x 240mm – 13 x 9 3/8’’) 

27 lines of ruled Latin text, written in an elegant and accomplished Gothic rotunda script in dark brown ink with rubrics in red.  Eight two-line illuminated initials alternating in deep blue with delicate red penwork, and red with delicate violet penwork.           

Italy, c. 1400.

This leaf continues Mass for the First Sunday in Lent. The two-line illuminated “F” begins: “Fideles…” (May Thy gifts, O God, detach us from earthly pleasures, and ever strengthen us with heavenly refreshment). 

The two-line illuminated “I” begins part of Psalm 90 (King James 91) 15, 16: “Invocabit…” (He shall cry to me, & I will hear him: I will deliver him, & I will glorify him: I will fill him with length of days. He that dwelleth in the aid of the Most High: shall abide under the protection of the God of Heaven).

The two-line illuminated “D” begins: “Deus…” (O God, who dost purify Thy Church by the yearly observance of Lent: grant to Thy household, that what we strive to obtain from Thee by abstinence, we may achieve by good works…).

The two-line illuminated “S” begins: “Sacrificium…” (We solemnly offer to Thee, O Lord, the Sacrifice of the beginning of Lent, beseeching Thee: that while we restrain our carnal feasting, we may abstain also from harmful pleasures). 

The two-line illuminated “T” begins: “Tui nos…” (May the holy reception of Thy Sacrament, O Lord, refresh us, that cleansing us from our old life…).

An attractive beautiflully scribed manuscript for an important part of the Lenten Season.
