An exceptional miniature - St Michael's victory over Devil

$0.00

Dramatic historiated illuminated “D” on parchment excised  from a Choirbook, circa 1500, Spain. (228 x 225mm - 9 x 8 3/4')

The miniature painting within the initial depicts St. Michael the Archangel’s Victory over the Devil.  This scene depicts the cosmic battle in heaven chronicled in the Apocalypse (Book of Revelation).  The haloed St. Michael, with large white wings and wearing red and blue robes and a silver armored breast plate, stands with both feed on top of a horned devil as he plunges the end of a cross-topped gold staff into the devil’s abdomen.  The devil looks directly at the reader as he lies pinned to the grassy dark green ground.

The initial is in blue and pink with white penwork and surrounded by a green floral design within a sepia border.

Presented in an archival 14 x 14'' mat
