EARLY CHRISTIAN ARTIFACT - “Asperging Wand” (Holy Water Sprinkler)

Eastern Roman/ Byzantine, circa 7th-12th Century AD 

 An unusual bronze artifact from the early period of Christianity. This bronze wand was used by a priest to sprinkle (asperge) holy water during services. The dove atop the wand is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. (Ref: G. Ferguson, “Signs and Symbols in Christian Art”).

In excellent condition with an attractive green patina.
