$0.00

Original incunabula leaf from the Bible in Latin (Biblia Latina) printed by Anton Koberger of Nuremberg in 1487. Reference: Hain 3167 & Darlow and Moule #6085 (note). (320 x 225 mm – 12 x 8 5/8’’)

This early leaf consists of text printed in gothic letter in two columns. The central text block contains text from the Prologue to Philippians , and Philippians 1:1-27.

The first illuminated “P” begins the Prologue:  “Phylippenses…” (The Philippians are Macedonians. They persisted in the faith after the word of truth was accepted, nor did they receive false apostles…).

The second illuminated “P” begins:  “Paulus…” (Paul and Timothy, the servants of Jesus Christ; to all the saints in Christ Jesus, who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons. Grace be unto you, and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my god in every remembrance of you,  always in all my prayers making supplication for you all, with joy; For your communication in the gospel of Christ from the first day until now…).

The central text is surrounded by Nicolaus de Lyra’s famous commentary. “This work, which was used by Luther, and influenced some of his writings” was first published with the biblical text just six years earlier, in 1481.
