This early leaf consists of text printed in gothic letters. The central text begins Galatians 6:14-18: “Domini nostril…” (Our Lord Jesus Christ; by whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world…).
The three-line illuminated “E” begins the Prologue to Ephesians: “Ephesii sunt…” (The Ephesians are Asians. They persisted in the faith after the word of truth was accepted…).
The multi-lined red and blue illuminated “P” begins Ephesians 1:1 – 5: “Paulus…” (Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, to all the saints who are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus. Grace be to you, and peace from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: As he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and unspotted in his sight in charity…).
The central text is surrounded by Nicolaus de Lyra’s famous commentary. “This work, which was used by Luther, and influenced some of his writings” was first published with the biblical text in 1481.
