Ancient Roman Glass Bracelet, 1st – 4th Century AD

An unusual and attractive large ancient bangle bracelet crafted of deep blue glass, twisted into a spiral pattern while molten. The surface has a remarkable and highly prized pearly silver iridescence.

Bracelets crafted of colored glass were often worn in Roman times as “costume jewelry” by women of all ages, and some were made for babies and young children. The survival of this fragile glass seems nearly miraculous. Occasionally examples where the glass has reacted to burial exhibit a shimmering iridescence that has long captivated the imagination of the most ardent collectors and artists.

Adornment in ancient Roman culture was always of great importance. Citizens would go to great lengths to acquire the latest fashion in clothing, hairstyles, and jewelry. Roman men, women, and children wore jewelry in abundance. It was viewed both as adornment and as visible evidence of wealth.
