$0.00

Original incunabula leaf from the Bible in Latin (Biblia Latina) with commentary by Nicolas de Lyra and printed by Anton Koberger of Nuremberg December 1487.  (305 x 218 mm – 12 x 8 5/8’’)

Reference: Goff #B-614; Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke #4289; Darlow and Moule #6085 (note). Printed in black ink with hand-illuminated letters in red and/or blue.

This early leaf consists of text printed in gothic letter in two columns. The central text block contains text from II Thessalonians 2:5 – 3:18 and opens I Timothy:: “Non retinitis…” (Remember you not, that when I was with you, I told you these things? Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by out epistle…The Lord direct your hearts, in the charity of God, and the patience of Christ…).

The six-line red illuminated “P” opens I Timothy:  “Paulus…” (Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus our hope…).

The central text is surrounded by Nicolaus de Lyra’s famous commentary. “This work, which was used by Luther, and influenced some of his writings” was first published with the biblical text just six years earlier, in 1481.
