Ancient Roman Handled Jug, c. 2nd – 4th Century AD

An attractive and technically sophisticated example of blown glass with applied handle, and a pear-shaped body with slender neck and flaring lip. This attractive jug was formed of three separate pieces of glass. The body was blown on a pontil rod and “pulled” to make a very tiny orifice to impede the evaporation of the costly oils it contained. The rimmed neck was then attached, and finally the handle was attached to the body and rim. Excellent condition with burial encrustation and patches of remarkable, fiery iridescence.

Provenance: Private New York City Collection, ex Antiquarium LTD.

The survival of this fragile glass seems nearly miraculous. Occasionally examples where the glass has reacted to burial exhibit a shimmering iridescence that has long captivated the imagination of the most ardent collectors and artists.
