BRONZE and GREENSTONE SEAL RING - “JANUS VASE”

Ancient Rome, Circa 1st - 3rd Century A.D.

An ancient bronze seal ring with an unusual and well carved green stone intaglio. The dark green oval seal stone depicts a “Janiform” Krater (vase) with a head on each side. The bronze band is slightly elliptical – a shape associate with Roman rings of the 1st to 3rd century.

In Roman mythology, Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions, also of gates, doorways, endings and time. He is shown with two faces since he looks to the future and the past. The Romans dedicated January to Janus.

In good wearable condition, retaining some dark patina. Accompanying the ring is an impression of the seal.

The Signet, or Seal Ring, was significant in Roman society, as its owner used it in validating serious legal documents.  Intaglios, and engraved or intaglio-cut gems could serve as seals, even while appearing decorative.  Cicero mentions them, and Pliny cites that the fashion of wearing signet rings eventually shifted to the little finger.  A signet ring was highly representative of the individual who wore it.  It was, in effect, his or her signature.
