This view emphasizes the beauty of the Hudson River and the mountains that border it on either side. The buildings of the Academy are found in the background, and in the foreground is a deer nestled among the brush. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, both the colonists and the British recognized the importance of gaining possession of the Hudson River valley, and West Point became the strategic key to its defense. On March 16, 1802, Congress passed an act establishing the United States Military Academy at West Point. The academy opened on July 4, 1802.
